5000 DWT Flettner Freighter

The 5000 DWT Flettner freighter has been developed within the European SAIL project. An important outcome of the project is that due to the dependence on trade winds, a 100% sailing vessel without an engine is not economically feasible within the commercial cargo transport sector. Broad research has been done to generate viable alternatives, leading to the model of wind assisted propulsion and hybrid shipping.

Mrs Netelenbos of the Royal Association of Netherlands Ship owners challenged all SAIL sympathizers to find a solution, when she opened the final SAIL conference in Delft on 22 April 2015. Here you will find an impression of the day in the Day report and also the enclosures of E+E Consultants and the Project Factsheets; see below. With this conference the project of SAIL comes to an end, but partners of this project will continue to make steps in sustainable shipping.

Working Session and final conference on 22 April

Two and a half years after the start of the interreg IVB SAIL project in Koudum, the Netherlands the projects ends also in the Netherlands. The Blue Week 2015, co-hosted by project partner MARIN, integrates the final conference of SAIL hosted Deltares in Delft.  The Blue Week provides a platform to discuss energy in shipping and offshore.
